For its wealth of castles from the Middle Ages, Spain has won considerable acclaim and one place well worth a visit is Costa Blanca. One famous castle is that of the 16th century structure Santa Pola Castle, designed to protect the region from pirate invasions. This fortification is a superb example of Renaissance architecture. In the castle walls there is the Archaeological Museum where exhibits of interest from a Roman period town and artefacts beginning inhabitant who resided in Cueva de las Aranas, “Cave Of Spiders”, are on display. Within the castle’s precincts there is also a Fishing Museum.
Another treasure is Castell de Santa Barbara located high up on the Benacantil Mountain right in the heart of Alicante. From miles around its strategic position and imposing size make it visible and at night when lit up it is a mesmerising sight. Built in the 10th century by the Moors, the castle got its name after King Alfonso the Wise took it again from them on Saint Barbara’s Day“ December 4th 1248. The castle is beautifully preserved, with fascinating dungeons, historical exhibits, a cannon tower, and a museum tracing its rich heritage. Its walls offer breathtaking views of Alicante below and the sea beyond. There is a little cafe within the castle grounds where visitors can take refreshments.
El Conceptor Castle, overlooking the port of Cartagena, is another place of enchantment. Accessible from below by a cliff-side lift, it sits on top of a hill to the south of the city and gives splendid views out over Cartagena as you ascend. Alternatively, one ascends to the hill from a higher approach and a more challenging walk. Rebuilt in the 13th century using stones on the site from the Roman Amphitheatre below, the castle has a gallery and exhibits that peer into its history and that of the city. Within the castle grounds are a charming pool with ducks and peacocks that saunter about freely.
